CField complete £10.5m refurbishment of iconic airship hangar
CField Construction have successfully completed the refurbishment of the iconic Grade II* Listed 'Shed No.1' airship hangar in Cardington, Bedfordshire. Originally built in 1916, Shed No.1 has a floor area of approximately 220,000 sqft and a roof height in excess of 50m. Prior to the refurbishment works, the hangar was a Category A building on English Heritage's 'Buildings At Risk' register and fell within the top 6% of important Listed Buildings in the UK. In its newly refurbished state, the hangar has been removed from the 'Buildings at Risk' register with Robert Parkinson of English Heritage identifying the project as 'a major success over the past year' at their Heritage at Risk National Launch.
Given the grade II* Listed status of the building, CField worked closely with English Heritage and the Bedford Borough Council Conservation Team to ensure that all works to the listed building were carried out in accordance with Conservation Principles, Policies and Guidance.
The works were carried out in a live tenanted building which involved close co-ordination and communication with all tenants which included Warner Bros, One Direction, Virgin Air Balloons and Hybrid Air Vehicles. The shed is now home to the largest aircraft in the world which is being developed and constructed by Hybrid Air Vehicles with its maiden European flight due to take place in Spring 2016.
